At our 10th anniversary monsoon concert, we were pleased to present the Indian premiere of Concerto Grosso in G Major by Johann Valentin Rathgeber. The soloists were all children.

Over the years, Child’s Play India has been featured in many national and international publications. In the past few months, we have been written about in The Hindu newspaper, which is a national newspaper widely read across the country. This brought us a fair bit of attention in South India, which was quite exciting!

They’ve been with us for several weeks, making music, braving our monsoon. Some of them have begun heading back home now, some moving on to travel a little more of India before going back to Spain. We’d like to say a BIG Thank You to all these lovely musicians who came to work with Child’s Play (India) Foundation this summer. We hope you had a lovely time here!
We were privileged to have many musicians visit us in 2012. Most of them visited the children at Hamara School, played for /with them and taught them a trick or two.

The Top Dog Brass Band from Dresden who gave us a stunning, impromptu performance at Hamara School; soprano Patricia Rozario who did a benefit concert for Child’s Play (along with Susanna Hurrell, Joanne D’Mello and Mark Troop); classical guitarist Pedro Rodrigues who enthralled us with his beautiful music and then went beyond the call of duty and donated all the proceeds from his guitar masterclass to Child’s Play and if that wasn’t enough, he happily performed for our World Busk event too; Owen Dalby and Meena Bhasin of ACJW, Carnegie Hall, Robert Mende, Bassoonist Stuart Potter and Clarinettist Akihide Noguchi who not only gave us a workshop, did a demonstration for our children but also performed at the inaugural Children’s Lit Fest in Goa!
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve now got a music project in Bangalore (Bengaluru)! We’ve got a violin teacher giving weekly lessons to a group of children at Abhayadhama, a charity in Whitefield!
And by the end of this month, we’ll hopefully have a music project in Mumbai as well!

Reshma is one of the girls in our violin project at Hamara School. She successfully auditioned for the Kala Academy last December , where she is now studying viola with Elvina Fernandes. Elvina helped Reshma choose a new instrument last week.

2012 has begun well for Child’s Play. Renowned soprano Patricia Rozario and her pupils Susanna Hurrell and Joanne D’Mello, along with pianist Mark Troop gave a wonderful concert (‘The Stunning Stratospheric Sopranos‘) in aid of our charity. The evening was magical and is still being talked about. Thanks to ProMusica for organising the event and for the performers for being so generous. Celebrity concerts such as these help us raise awareness about our work.
We’re also delighted to announce that Child’s Play has received the certificate of exemption under section 80G of the Income Tax law. This means that you can claim back 50% of your donation to us (in India), when you file your returns. All the more reason to make another donation this new year!
Your donations are going to support not one, not two but three projects in 2012. Our violin and recorder classes at Hamara School are progressing well. The children in the project gave their first public group performance at the Hamara School annual day function held in December at the Goa State Museum. We hope this will encourage them to work harder and enjoy their lessons even more.
Child’s Play is delighted to be offering violin lessons to underprivileged children in Kolkatta. Starting in January, we will be working with twenty boys and girls in the care of The Philanthropic Society of the Orthodox Church, which is an NGO that has schools and orphanages in Kolkatta.
We’re also very happy to announce that two of our violin students have successfully auditioned for places at the Kala Academy (Goa’s state-run arts academy) this year. This is no mean feat considering the short time that they have been playing the instrument and the stiff competition from a crowd of middle-class children with longer training under their belt, better instruments and more confidence. We’re so proud of Reshma and Irfan and are looking forward to their progress this year.

We’d like to acknowledge and thank Christopher Gomes of Furtados Goa for all the help and support he and his stores have given Child’s Play over the years. The music scene in Goa is richer because of them.
